I am reading this in my room at Potton.. will be returning tomorrow..
Mo
in the doghouse....... but that's where they like me to be!
They were three on the 27th january. As someone else said "where has the time gone"
Sounds an awful injury. Poor Jess. Sorry to hear you had to pts but it sounds like the kindest thing you could have done.
We have had another disaster. Jess, the black and white Spanie,l who featured with Lucy in some of her early vidoes broke her elbow while out with the shoot yesterday and we had to made the heart wrenching decision to have her put to sleep - she was only three which made the decision even harder.
With regard to Zeph, as I mentioned earlier ,we had exacly the same problem with Lucy and it didn't matter how long you left her she still barked and yapped. I even had to move bedrooms and use ear plugs at one stage. Eventually I could stand it no longer and I am afraid I lost my temper slightly and banged on her cage with a rolled up newspaper, she looked a bit shocked but it did work. Each time she barked after that I rushed into the room, didn't speak but banged on the cage with the newspaper, She eventually got the message.
We are the proud owners of Gilbert, Zeph's brother. Gilbert sleeps in a crate in our bedroom and I am CERTAIN that if he didn't he would bark all night. Our vague intention is to move him out as soon as he has developed a more grown up attitude to the rest of his life, which could take some time.
We cover the crate with a throw, like you would cover a parrot so that he can't see much. Owls sometimes disturb him.
Our current problem, which I am intending to email Nicky about for advice - are you reading this, Nicky? - is Gillie nipping and tugging at clothes when ever he rejoins the 'pack' or whenever Gordan and I busy moving about the house ignoring him. I know the solution to this type of problem is to ignore the beast, but have you tried ignoring a munster that is biting your bum, pulling at your clothes hard enough to rip them and, if you turn your back on him, he dives between you legs to arrive in front of you again.
He does have his good points as well!
Thanks for the extra info. Obviously the more info we have the better we can advise, no matter what the problem is.
By the sounds of it he has realised that if he makes a noise you will go through and see him. The only way I can think of to stop it is to put him in his crate, and leave him. Once he makes a noise you then go through and take him into the garden ignoring him. Do not make eye contact, do not speak to him. Praise him if he does anything but then put him back into his crate and ignore him again. Unfortunately this might take some time before he gets the message that he is not getting the attention he wants. It might be a few minutes, but expect it to be days, unfortunately. Munsters are stubborn at times........
I have heard that by taking him into the bedroom (in his crate) and gradually moving it further and further away works, but have never tried it. Though you have stated that this is not an option for you.
Anyone else got any ideas?
Linda
Hi There
Here are a few more details about the barking habits of Zeph
1: What time does the barking start?
Last night he was put to bed about 11.45 pm after a late 15 minute walk in the park, barking started at about 12.15 am and finished at 6.45 am when we got up!
We tried to ignore it as much as possible I got up once but did not enter the room as I have done on previous nights I just rapped on the door loudly as I have read this can stop them, it did for 3 minutes but then he started again.
2: Could it be badgers/foxes that are disturbing him?
I don't think this is the case.
3: Could it be any neighbours moving about?
No they get up at the same time as us, we have been around to tell them that we are having a problem with Zeph at the moment and they seem to be OK with it.
4: Could it be your central heating switching on/off?
The central heating comes on at 7 am so it can't be that.
The only thing that comes to mind is that he was unwell last Wednesday/Thursday with the runs we got up to let him out to relieve himself, but this is sorted now after a visit to the vets last Friday
I have tried the following:
Radio on low, item of clothing in his crate, toys, late night walk.
The having him in the bedroom is not an option for us.
As I type this he is fast asleep at my feet!!!
My dogs all sleep in my bedroom so not much help there I'm afraid. However, my thoughts are along the lines of:
1: What time does the barking start?
2: Could it be badgers/foxes that are disturbing him?
3: Could it be any neighbours moving about?
4: Could it be your central heating switching on/off?
Knowing what is causing the barking is the first step to stopping him.
We need more info.........
that Zeph has just started barking. Can you think of anything that has changed. Has his crate moved, have you had friends staying over. If you can't think of anything then got me stumped. How to sort?
Skye and Spring are our first dogs so have negligible experience.
My noddy thoughts are,
- Try leaving some clothing that you have just been wearing, a jumper say, just outside the door to the room he is in and/or
- When you put him to bed then sit/stand outside the door to the room he is in and if he barks then quietly say settle done. If he does then go further away (after leaving some clothing). If he doesn't then ?.
The other side of the coin could be, when he barks go into the room - command Quiet - then throw some water in his face.
Just one of the dilemmas of looking after a dog.
Hope you find something.
Hi Alan
Lucy was exactly the same, I didn't get a full night's sleep untill she was at least 8 months. I think it starts when they bond with you and can't bear to be seperated. We used to put Rascal, one of the Spaniels, in with her but it didn't work every night.I wish I could be of more help.
Hi Mo, Sorry to hear your news. We missed you today at Mugdock. I was speaking to a women there last week who had a labrador. She asked me to say hello to you. Maureen Murphy, she used to have a Munsterlander from the same litter as one of yours.
See you at Waverley?
John
Sorry to hear about your loss Mo.
It was the Kirkintilloch show we were entered for today. Mis-judged the timings tho and missed the class forgot the gundog entry would be low with Waverly being on. Will have to appologise to Donna next time I see her.
Gill
Hi Gill,
That's a shame you won't make it tomorrow? What show are you going to? Good Luck - I am sure Ellie will do you proud.
Talking of Shows - who is coming to Waverley on Sunday? Elvis and I will be there. I've checked the schedule. Judging starts at 10.30am. We are in Ring 5, Class 78. There are 8 classes before us. I will probably get there for about 11am but I imagine we won't be in until after 12.
Pam
We wont be able to make tomorrow either as we have a show tomorrow.
Gill
Hi,
That's okay Carole, It is far for you guys to come. We will need to get another wee Saturday down at yours soon. See what we can get the dogs up to next!!!LOL
I see from the papers that Britains Got Talent was up in Scotland this week. Did Erin get a callback?
Pam xx
Hi Pam, We're not able to come on Sat but hope you have a good time.
Cheers carol
Hi Everyone!!!
Elspeth and I are planning on meeting at Mugdock Park on Saturday morning for a walk. If anyone else fancies joining us that would be great. The more Munsters the Merrier!!!!!
Meeting in the usual place at 10am!!!
Hopefully see some of you there
Pam & Elvis xxxx
The only thing wrong with her is the extra weight that she now needs to lose (hee hee)
I didn't say anything sooner as I felt I had to let the would be owners know first and discuss what to do next. Thankfully most are going to wait and see, but one or two have said they might ask around first. I can't blame them. There is no guarantee that I will mate Seska, or that she will produce any pups.
Yes, we are every disappointed but nothing is guaranteed. Even if there is nothing wrong there is still the possibility that any mating might not produce puppies, but another dog/bitch might be forthcomng. Oh the joys of it all.........
It means that I won't get to as many shows this year though........
Hi,
I am sorry to hear about Seska. It must be quite upsetting. Well hopefully if you decide to try again next season things will work out better.
As Vicky said main thing is Seska is fit and healthy.
Pam
So sorry to hear Seska didn't have any pups this time, must be gutting being all prepaired for them and then nothing. Atleast Seska is ok tho can always try again.

Thanks Mo
I was very impressed with Zeph, he is very calm and quite angelic compared to Lucy who can not sit or stand still at any point during walks. He's also very quiet, Lucy would have had some comment to make!!!!! Perhaps I should have a dog next.
Hi Mo
Sorry, still no success
Hi Mo
Can't open the video of Zeph. Can you help?
How is Cesky doning has her temp. droped? is she very fat??
keep us informed and good luck to you both
Mo
Yes it was the Falkirk Show. Weather looked better at mugdock lol Ellie was manky by the time we got to the venue as we were parked miles away and there was a lot of flooding and mud, luckily Ellie doesn't mind the blow heaters (as we use them at training) and stood infront of one to dry off before I got too hot lol.
Vicky, we wont be at manchester its a bit far for this time of the yr (never know what the weather will do) and I am far too skint after Christmas and its Rhys' birthday on Saturday. Good luck with your girls tho and let us know how you get on.
Gill
well done to ellie on winning best nsc, not an easy job with a munster so really well done. good on you ellie you show the other gundogs up.
Frank, me, the two collies & Ghillie really enjoyed our first outing with the Scottishmunsters group. It was great to meet some more new faces. We really must be mad to do that on such a terrible day. I apologise for dashing off but Ghillie was shivering so badly I was quite concerned. He was absolutely fine of course...mother hen syndrome!!! I towelled him off and wrapped him in my old collie bitche's waterproof, gave him an early lunch and he just went to sleep curled up in the van with Jig and Judo. He was in fine form when we got home leaping all over the poor boys while we had an hour long session with the brushes and the hair drier.
I was very disappointed with the photos, most of which were blurry and unrecognisable. The best two were one of Ghillie and one of Oscar which I will attempt to download now. Apologies if it doesn't work, I will keep the picture of Oscar to give you next time. It is a good one.

Looks like you had fun at Mugdock today who all braved the rotten weather?
Ellie did her self proud today lol she got 1st in A.V. gundog NSC Open and best AV gundog NSC not a bad result for her first show of the year.
Gill
Sorry we wont be able to make this one as we have a show on Sunday.
Gill
Hi,
There are a few of us meeting up for a walk on Sunday morning if anyone else wants to joins us.
We're meeting at the Craigend Car Park in Mugdock Country Park at 10am for a walk round the Loch.
The More the Merrier!!!!!
Pam & Elvis
I wasn't checking anyones spelling. I was agreeing with the statement. I stopped spell checking after Jenni was diagnosed with dislexia, er diyslecsia, er oh bother, you know what I mean.....LOL...!! She can't read or write properly so has to have the spell check on her computer and a dictionary by her side whenever she is writing anything.
(oh, and I do know how to spell dyslexia, I was making a point....) hee hee
I moved about a lot during school years and was taught different ways to spell and have always been a pretty good speller, but don't point things out to other people so long as it is readable and understandable. Any mistakes I make tend to be typos - fingers moving too fast.....
Hi Mo
Not sure who produced the spell check but as an ex-English Teacher ' an essential and distinguishing attribute of something or someone'.
'Quality not quantity'
I so agree with you there. so long as I get a bitch for myself........ knowing my luck I'll get one puppy, and it will be male....LOL!!
Hi,
Yeah I think you did miss the giggle the back of the walk were having. Not to worry, as I said I think all the dogs would have passed with flying colours!!!!!
Pam & Elvis
Hi,
Well, can't believe it's already 2009. Where did 2008 go???
I hope everyone had a fantastic Christmas & New Year. I certainly did. I spent Christmas with my friends & family, eating good food & drinking nice wine (and vodka, and gin and.... LOL)!!!!
New Year was brilliant. Thanks to everyone who made the effort to come up to the Munster Meet at Tenstmuir on Hogmanay. It was a brilliant morning, I just love seeing all the dogs running around & playing together so happily. The "Dog Borstal" Style Wood Test was particularly good. Pleased to say I think all the dogs would have had a red rossette at the end!!!!LOL
Elvis & I also got to spend some time down at Carol & Colins on Saturday. it was a great day. The dogs in loved it - running around that huge field & then having a go on the Agility. Brilliant Fun. Thanks for the invite down Carole. Hope we can do it again soon.
Well, has anyone made any New Year resolutions?
Pam & Elvis
Yes Vicky - munster_skye is Carol and Colin.
If its a photo collage - its definately Colin as he has more patience.
An ordinary photo then it could be either of us.
Gill - both videos links work, Talking about speedy hounds then wee Kizzie is lightning fast.
Cheers Carol (i'll try and sign mine)
So well it decided to appear twice lol
Video in the first post didn't seem to work so trying again using a different method. Fingers crossed it works this time.

Munster_Lucy. Life has thrown you some hard knocks recently so hopefully things will pick up. I'm sure your dad is well taken care for in his new home where you are getting help to look after him.
Your right about the turn of speed these munsters have. Skye is pretty fast. She can give Spring a 50yrd start and still get to an object 100yrds away before Spring.
Vicky,
Love the look on your young pups face. These munsters always look like they are listening when you talk to them.
Hi Mo
Sorry I have been so long in replying to your pre-christmas comment about Lucy but I have been away from my desk for two weeks over the holiday period. The munster is doing quite well, have had her carrying cold game and had hoped to take her out on a quiet shoot in January but she came into season yesterday so probably wont manage that now. Perhaps as well as she is a bit head strong and has the potential to become a hooligan!!! Shame they banned the Waterloo Cup 'cause she would have been in with a chance. Not that I allow her to course hares but she has a fantastic turn of speed.
A young gentleman by the name of the Hon James Savile - son of Lord Mexborough, come out on Lord Fevrsham's family day accompanied by a rather nice four year old Munster bitch, couldn't remember her breeding but he intends to breed form her this year. Does anyone know of him? The dog had lovely dark coloured markings and appeared very well behaved. Apparently she squeaks a bit at the peg sometimes but I gather that's fairly normal for munsters!!!!
My life is as near back to normal as it ever will be after the sudden death of my mother. Father is now in a care home which has taken the pressur off a bit but he is still quite demanding and I have to manage his affairs which is extra work I really don't have time for .However he always appears very grateful which is something. Next task is to sell his house which I don't relish in the present economic climate.
Lucy is much quieter than she was and has now moved out of her cage into the dog room where Purdy, the eldest of the flatcoats, keeps everyone in order. She still gives poor little Jess a hard time and drags her about by the scruff of the neck at every opportunity.Jess used to be able to out run her in the fields but Lucy is much faster now so there is no escape until Aunty Purdey steps in!!!
A very Happy New Year to all the Scottish Munsters.
Love
Liz & Lucy
Wow its been busy here.
We went up to see Erin and Kermit on their new yr ride the other day was quite something to see. Kermit is a real sweetheart. Well done Erin your doing a good job with him. The pics have come out well Nicky.
